When it comes to comparing the CPAP vs BiPAP though, these machines have many differences when treating sleep apnea and respiratory diseases. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and (BiPAP) Bi-level positive airway pressure have the same function when it comes to treating obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory disease.

CPAP machines only deliver one level of air pressure and is most beneficial for anyone with severe sleep apnea.  The BiPAP delivers two different settings of air pressure and are usually more beneficial for people who have certain lung diseases, for example, COPD. The air pressure these machines apply pressure to the airways helping you breathe while you sleep.

When the CPAP machine operates, it applies a continuous and consistent pressure to the airways.  When the BiPAP machine is operating, it delivers two adjusted pressures to the airways.  The Bi-PAP pushes high pressure when you inhale and low pressure when you exhale.

BiPAP machines are a little easier to handle and get use to with people compared to the CPAP.  When exhaling with a CPAP you have more pressure to deal with which can become pretty tiresome for some people.  The CPAP air pressure can not be adjusted to two different pressures like the BiPAP, which causes that extra effort to inhale and exhale.

CPAP machines are bigger and louder than than BiPAP machines, but they are cheaper for treating sleep apnea.  They were also developed nine years before the BiPAP.

1) CPAP machines push one continuous flow of air, and the BiPAPs have two adjustable air pressures.

2) CPAP machines push continuous pressure through the airways which makes breathing easier when you sleep.  BiPAPs push higher pressure when you are breathing in and lower pressure when you breathe out.

3) You can adjust the level of air pressure with BiPAP and you cannot with a CPAP.

4) CPAP is good for people with severe sleep apnea, and the BiPAP is better for people who suffer from lung diseases or have a hard time in general breathing.  COPD is one of those lung diseases BiPAPs are beneficial for.

5) CPAP machines are heavier, louder and cheaper than the BiPAP.

6) CPAP machines require you to breathe hard.  For some people the demand to breathe harder can get tiresome.
